Alexander Ruiz Martinez

January 2, 1926 — November 1, 2017

Sgt. Alexander Ruiz Martinez, 91, born in San Antonio, Texas, on January 2, 1926, passed out of this world today to be with our heavenly father and his beloved grandparents. A veteran of World War II, he served with the 97th Infantry Battalion, 303 Regiment, Company B in the European theater and was wounded in combat earning a Purple Heart. At the end of the war, Alex joined the MP’s and was transferred to Japan to serve as part of the occupational forces upon Japan’s surrender. After a few short years, duty to country called and he volunteered for Korea where he served for two tours in the Military Police with the 1st Cav and again was wounded in combat earning a second Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. After returning to the states and continuing to serve his country as an MP, Alex worked in several states including Washington, Ft. Monmouth New Jersey, Ft. Bliss Texas, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas and finally settled in El Paso where he worked as a liaison between the US and Mexican Consulate. After retiring from the US Army in the 1960’s and settling in Northeast El Paso he focused on civilian life continuing to work in security and raise his family. Alex married his is beloved wife Agnes in 1950 and she faithfully stood by his side until her unexpected passing in January of 1998. They traveled the world together as military families do enduring the hardships and difficulties experienced by those that serve our nation. Alex was a member of the Masonic order and a Scottish Rite, Shrine member of the El Maida Drum and Bugle Corp. Alex is survived by his daughter Alicia Schultz, Son in law Oscar Schultz, Stepson Robert Durkin, Daughter in-law Monica Durkin, Granddaughter in-law Ofy Rubio, three grandchildren; Rene Rubio, Michael and Steven Schultz, and three great grandchildren; Belen and Isaiah Rubio, and Aiden I. Schultz. His loss will be deeply felt as he was such a powerful influence to his family and for his personal sacrifice and contributions to our nation’s freedom. We love you dearly and salute you! Visitation: 5:00pm to 9:00pm on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast. Funeral Service: 9:00am on Monday, November 6, 2017 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast.
