Carmen Louise Loewenstein Wood, 87, passed away August 3, 2014, at Center for Compassionate Care West - Hospice in El Paso, Texas; she was surrounded with family, friends, caregivers and Angels. Carmen was born on March 11, 1927 in Chihuahua, Mexico to George Buchanan Loewenstein and Carmen Hector Loewenstein. The Loewenstein family is a pioneer family having settled in El Paso / Ysleta in 1867, and the Hector Saenz family from Alsace- Lorraine, France and Jimenez, Mexico are pioneer families in Mexico. Her sister, Alice Loewenstein Mora and her brother George Hector Loewenstein predeceased Carmen. She also has a beloved surviving sister Margy Parsons in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Carmen leaves many nieces, nephews and friends, and her memory will be forever treasured. Carmen began her career working for the American Consulate in Chihuahua, Mexico and was transferred to Mexico City to work in the American Embassy. In 1954, Carmen and her son, George moved to El Paso. She worked for Steinbach Construction and Texaco Refining and later joined Zeigler Cattle Company in 1957. Carmen developed expertise in the importation of cattle from Mexico and was later named Secretary / Treasurer of Zeigler Cattle Company where she retired in 1985 after a distinguished career in the cattle industry. In 1961, she married William E. Wood, Jr., and they recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. Carmen and Bill enjoyed a wonderful life together. They raised their son George, daughter Jennifer and son Billy. Her childrens’ spouses James Veale, Chris Weddington Wood and Ruthie Hellums Lowen loved Carmen and honored her and Bill with eight grandchildren and eleven great- grandchildren. Her grandchildren Mary Louise Lowen Froissard, Ralph Lowen, James Veale Jr., Daniel Veale, Kara Veale Harper, Nicole Veale, Lauren and Katherine Wood are left with a legacy of love, family, unity, country and religion. Her husband and family will miss her greatly and are comforted in the knowledge that she is at peace in the house of the Lord. The family thanks her daughter and caregiver Jennifer Veale and her husband and children for their devoted care, love and attention given to our beloved mother. A Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM, with a Vigil Service at 7:00PM at Sunset Funeral Home-West. The Rite of the Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at 2:00PM at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 400 W. Sunset Rd. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens of the Valley in Santa Teresa, NM.
