Dwayne Edward Gray was born on April 18 in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma to his parents. Wilmer O. Gray, Jr. and Mary Irene Gray.
Dwayne grew up in northeast El Paso attending school at Dowell Elementary and Terrace Hills Middle. He was a 1980 graduate of Andress High School. There he participated in cross country and basketball. Dwayne had a charming and outgoing personality and many of his childhood friendships continued throughout his life. He attended Texas Tech University, but later received his Bachelor’s degree in Business from the University of Texas at El Paso. Following graduation, Dwayne joined the U.S. Army but a military career was not for him.
Dwayne was always enterprising and energetic in his career and work pursuits. He had been employed in the fields of real estate, security, and as a technology instructor. He lived for a time in New Mexico, Arkansas, and Arizona.
For almost ten years, he was a loving husband to his wife, Brenda and they enjoyed a quiet life in Springdale, Arkansas. Dwayne dutifully assumed the role of care provider to his wife during her final years of battling cancer. She died at home. After her death, Dwayne returned to his hometown of El Paso in 2010 - where he again was faithful in his care and support of his aging parents.
Dwayne loved to have a good time and made sure everyone else did the same. He could talk about anything and to anyone. His friends probably have “stories and tales” his family wouldn’t want to hear. He possessed an AMAZING memory, recollecting names and events from thirty or more years ago.
Our brother was a brave and sensitive spirit who could also be impulsive and reckless. He loved his parents, sisters, and brother, and was a fighter to protect them. Our father was most uncomfortable in the presence of death and dying. Even at his own parents’ and sister’s bedside, our dad kept a distance; it was all too emotionally painful. So, at God’s will, our beloved brother, Dwayne, bravely sacrificed his life . . . dying first – to face “the Horror of the shade”. To be there and say, “It’s okay, Dad. Take my hand.”
“That which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts made weak
By time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.”
Alfred Tennyson
