Edie Rubalcaba

July 31, 1936 — July 2, 2014

Edie Rubalcaba passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, peacefully at home surrounded by her beloved family after a battle with cancer. Edie was born in El Paso on July 31, 1936, to Ramon and Carmen Salazar (the latter of whom worked at the Farah factory for 40 years). She attended San Jacinto Elementary School and Alamo Middle School, graduating from Bowie High School in 1955. Edie went to work immediately after graduating high school, first at JC Penny then at Midland Specialty, where she met her husband Arturo Rubalcaba. They married on November 14, 1959, at St. Pius X Catholic Church. They raised two beautiful children, Mark and Jennifer. Edie’s career with the El Paso County District Clerk's office began on May 15, 1962. She worked within all departments of the office for a total of 40 years, six months and two weeks. In 1982, Edie was elected the first Hispanic and first female District Clerk in El Paso’s history. She successfully held this position for more than 20 years, retiring on December 31, 2002, which made her one of the longest-serving elected officials in El Paso county. As a proud and caring community leader, she was a long-time member of LULAC Council #335, including serving as parliamentarian, and of many more organizations that benefited from her advocacy, mentorship and volunteerism. Tennis was a passion that ignited her life, keeping her driven with its competitive spirit and camaraderie. She was a championship United States Tennis Association (USTA) player with local El Paso teams and was on the Board of Directors of the El Paso Tennis Club. Edie was preceded in death by her husband Arturo. She is survived by her son Mark and daughter Jennifer; grandchildren Jennifer, James and Kelly; great-granddaughter Bella; sisters Edna Burkolder of Phoenix, Arizona, and Alice Carter of Lubbock, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws who loved her dearly. The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Byron Chesbro and Dr. Anuradha Gupta, of Texas Oncology in El Paso, and CIMA Hospice along with their staffs for their wonderful care and guidance. Edie was very grateful to the people of El Paso for giving her the opportunity to serve them and providing her with a very blessed life. Edie was respected by everyone who met her. Her presence alone would light up a room. She had a magical way of making everyone feel special, whether friend or stranger. The family asks that those who wish to attend the funeral come dressed in bright colors, which Edie loved and will represent and honor her brilliant life. May her light continue to shine bright.
