Franklin Richard Simmons

Franklin Richard Simmons, 74, passed away on Saturday, September 6 2014. Franklin Richard Simmons was born in Brooklyn New York on November 25, 1939 to the late John and Druesilla Simmons. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1957. In 1958, Franklin Richard Simmons proudly joined the United States Army serving 3 terms of duty in Vietnam. While serving in the United States Army he earned the following decorations and medals: Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, 3 Overseas Service Bars, Marksman Badge Rifle M-16, Drill Sergeant ID Badge, 2 Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal to name a few and retired in May 31, 1982. In1972, he met the love of his life Catalina Contreras they married they had 8 children, all of whom he was proud of. He is survived by his wife Catalina Contreras de Simmons, his 8 children Hortencia, Norma, Maria, Blanch, Ferdinand, Teresa, Julio and Luis; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and a host of grand, great-grand and great-great-grand nieces and nephews extending across the United States. Franklin Richard Simmons was a courageous man, devoted husband, wonderful father, caring grandfather, great grandfather and loving uncle. According to his niece Judy Simmons-Hope his motto was “Life is hard, but it’s fair”. To his daughter Blanch it was, “It is what it is”. He was always willing to help anyone that was in need. Everyone could see his love and strength in helping people despite his health. 2 Tim 4:7-8 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me… Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 9:00pm with a Vigil at 6:00pm on Sunday, September 14, 2014 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast. Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00am on Monday, September 15, 2014 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Committal Service to follow at 11:00am at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
