George Joseph Barela

GEORGE J. BARELA passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2014 at the age of 84. He retired from the El Paso Times after many years of service. He was a longtime member of St. Matthew Catholic Church. George was very active in many organizations such as; Knights of Columbus El Paso Council # 638, where he was a 4th Degree Knight and Faithful Navigator, member of Sertoma, Scout Master of Troop 250 and American Legion Post 0058. He is survived by his loving wife Lilia Barela, his children: Samuel J. Barela and wife Anita, Georgiana Gale and husband Steve, and Richard R. Barela and wife Graciela, his grandchildren: Andrea Barela, Valerie Barela, Samantha Salazar, Jeremy Gale, Charly LeBlanc, Benjamin Barela and Daniel Barela, great-grandchildren: Stephen Salazar, C.J. LeBlanc, Jason LeBlanc and Landon LeBlanc. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He will be greatly missed for his love of life and sense of humor. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 from 5:00PM to 9:00PM, with Vigil Service at 7:00PM at Sunset Funeral Home-West. Celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at 10:00AM at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 400 W. Sunset Rd. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens of the Valley in Santa Teresa, NM, with Navy Honors. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home-West, 480 N.
