Joan Annabelle Benson

December 3, 1931 — February 4, 2014

On February 2, 2014, Joan Annabelle Benson nee Leavy was reunited in heaven with the love of her life, Robert L. (Bob) Benson. Joan was born on December 3, 1931 to John P. and Mary Helen Toughill Leavy in Philadelphia, Pa. She was raised in Baltimore, MD. She met and married Bob in Aberdeen, MD in 1954. In 1961 Bob and Joan moved to El Paso, TX, where they promptly got involved with the community they would call home for life. Joan was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Psi. With three children, Joan became active in PTA and Volunteers in Public Schools. She is a past President of the PTAs at Dowell, Terrace Hills and Andress High Schools and spent many hours volunteering at all three schools. Joan also spent many hours volunteering at the Northeast Family YMCA in the summers. She was a founding member of the Juvenile Court Conference Committee where she helped young people in crisis redirect their lives. With Bob, Joan raised three children and spent countless hours volunteering with the Blessed Sacrament Athletic Association, Bobby Sox Softball League, and Northgate Optimist Clubs. Later in life, Joan became a precinct Judge with the County of El Paso, working the elections for over twenty years. Joan is preceded in death by her parents, one brother John Leavy, and her husband Bob Benson. Joan is survived by her children, Susan Tracey Benson, Roger Stewart Benson (wife, Carol Christian Benson), and Michael Eric Benson. Grandchildren Mark Benson (Tracey) and Nathaniel Benson and Ethan Benson (Roger & Carol). The family would like to thank all of the staff at Davita Trans Mountain where mom was a patient for the last 10 years, and Dr. Michael Traylor and Myrna for your care over the years. We’d also like to thank the staff at Tender Care Home Health, specifically Lidia and Audrey, you both hold a special place in Mom’s and our hearts. As a dedicated volunteer and champion for the youth of our community, the family asks on Mom’s behalf that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Andress High School Alumni Association, or your favorite charity, in her name. Please join us in a celebration of Mom’s life. Services will be as follows: Visitation, Monday, February 10, 2014 from 5 to 9 pm at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast at 4631 Hondo Pass Drive.
