Mary Virginia Hurt Calley On April 10, 2014, Mary Virginia Hurt Calley “Jennie”, 94 of Carlsbad, New Mexico, Passed away of natural causes. Born in Deming, New Mexico, August 21, 1919 to parents E.F. Hurt and Georgia America Evans Hurt. She married Lawrence J. Calley August 10, 1938 moving to Carlsbad to begin ranching with husband and his Grandparents, Jim and Annie Dublin. Times were hard but made it with the help of family, friends and ranching neighbors they were also blessed with one daughter, Leane. Jennie began working in town at Carlsbad Elks Lodge #1558; she was a charter member of BPO Does #43 since 1948. In later years she worked at Cotton Growers, Inc. at Otis, New Mexico as a bookkeeper and jack of all trades. She also joined Business and Professional Woman, was local President in 1975 and held other offices thru the years. She was a member of Hillcrest United Methodist Church, President of Hillcrest United Methodist woman for four years. and was an active member of Old Timers Association in Deming, New Mexico. Jennie touched many hearts in her 94 years was pen pal, Aunt “Jennie” , Granny Jennie, Great Grandma Jennie and “Jennie Burro” to so many adopted kids she loved like her own, attending many school functions when called. She loved cards, letters and phone calls, could not pass up Dairy Queen, she always had a little cough as an excuse to stop. She liked traveling and trips’ thinking it was always a great adventure such as her two Alaskan Cruises. She enjoyed reunions with family and friends at Elephant Butte Lake. Jennie enjoyed watching hummingbirds in later retired years, also never turning down a red enchilada or pot of beans, green chili burger or a chocolate cake. Jennie always had an independent grin or a mischievous little smile on her face and will be missed by many friends one and all. She was such a special person, and great mom. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence J. Calley, her parents; E.F. Hurt and Georgia America Evans Hurt, half brother; Edgar Hurt, brothers; E.C. “Clinton” Hurt, E.L. “Spud” Hurt, James William “Jim” Hurt, sisters; Margaret Elizabeth “Beth” Hurt McNutt, Ethel Victoria Hurt Powell, Bettie Grace Hurt Nunn, nephews; Ernest Hurt and James Patrick Nunn. She is survived by her daughter Leane A. Calley Coon and son-in-law, Evan D. Coon, sister-in-law; Velva Hurt, nieces; Tamara Hurt, Dorris Brown (Russell), Barbara Fair, Rosalie Johnson (Bennett), Caroline McNutt Chapman, nephews; James William Hurt II ( Lupe), Lawrence Hurt (Kelly), Avery Hurt, Paul Hurt (Ann), Richard Powell, Ronald Powell (Sylvia), Richard Pryor Nunn, great nieces; Courtney Hurt, Victoria Hurt, Renee Hurt, Jamie Northrup (Paul), Shawnna Ryder, Dawnna Ryder, Fawn Hosey, Stephanie Mullinix (Marty), Patty Krieger (C. J.), great nephews; Wry Hurt (Amanda), James William Hurt III, David Hurt, Remington Hurt, David Brown (Varena), Lawn Hosey, Mike Paxon (Natalie), Alan Johnson (Nancy), David Johnson (Rebecca), James Johnson, Charles Crawford Nunn, adopted kids; sons, daughters, , grandkids, great grandkids too numerous to mention. Special thanks to all the nurses, doctors and therapists who made Jennie’s life easier in the last few months. In Lieu of flowers, make donations in Memory of Mary Virginia Hurt Calley “Jennie” to your favorite charity. Per her wishes no funeral services will be held.
