Norman Ralph Lawrence

Colonel (Retired, USA) Norman R. “Larry” Lawrence passed away on April 9, 2014 after a short illness. He was born in Elyria, Ohio on December 9, 1929. He was drafted into the military in 1951, attended OCS at Fort Bliss in 1952, was commissioned a 2nd LT of Artillery and was assigned to Wiesbaden, Germany. Subsequent assignments were unaccompanied tours of Vietnam and Korea and accompanied tours of: Fort Worth, Texas; Rapid City, South Dakota; Fort Sill, Oklahoma; Wilmington, Ohio; Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; Panama Canal Zone, Panama; Fort Bliss, Texas; and The Pentagon. Prior to his retirement in 1981, he was the Director of Training for the Air Defense Artillery Center at Fort Bliss, Texas. His many decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Medal. He was the Honorary Colonel of the 7th ADA Regiment from 1987-2013. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph R. and Ilene G. Lawrence and his brother, Richard R. Lawrence. Larry is survived by his loving wife, Ann and daughter, Patricia Ann who reside in El Paso, Texas. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Betty J. Lawrence, of Ohio and many nieces and nephews. Following his retirement from the U.S. Army he and Ann formed their own company, Applied Learning Systems, Inc., where he served as the VP until they closed the business in 2011. He was an avid golfer, playing at the Fort Bliss Golf Course Complex where he achieved the dream of “a hole on one” in January 2001. Funeral Mass will be said at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at St. Michaels (Fort Bliss Chapel #2). Interment to follow at 2:00 pm at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Full Military Honors. The Lawrence Family would like to thank the WBAMC ICU Staff and Kindred Hospital and ICU Staff for their compassionate and extraordinary care.
