Rogelio “Chito” Carlos, Jr., 79, of El Paso, TX passed peacefully at 2:07 p.m. August 26th, 2017 in his home, surrounded by his family.
Born May 22, 1938 in El Paso, TX to Rogelio Sr. and Guadalupe Carlos.
Survived by his wife, Esperanza Carlos; children: Guadalupe, Ricardo, Roberto, Christina and her husband Johnny Quint Roberson, Graciela and her husband Daniel Hunt, Ruben and his wife Luz Cervantes, and Rogelio III; fifteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and six siblings.
Rogelio was among the first Mexican-American employees to be promoted to upper management in his thirty-five years at ASARCO and his family holds an important part of El Paso history as some of the few remaining descendants of Smeltertown.
Rogelio was known around the community for his congenial and always helpful attitude and his deep devotion to his family. He spent his retirement traveling across the country to be with his children and grandchildren, whose careers and lives found them in places as far away as Nevada, California and across Texas.
Rogelio loved the game of golf and was a traveling member of the Pan American Golf Association, playing in tournaments across the United States and Mexico. He was a die-hard Cowboys fan and shared his love for dancing with his wife of 58 years.
He was a handyman and maintained his legacy through his home and neighborhood, where he lived for 52 years. He was a devoted member and community leader of St. Pius X Catholic Church, where he organized meetings and fundraisers for the remodeling of the church. He would often use his handy work and his children for the betterment of the community, putting together booths for the annual kermesses and driving up Mt. Cristo Rey to repair the road.
He loved his family and neighbors unconditionally and indiscriminately and saw the world with compassion and empathy. He served as a moral compass for the people around him, and his influence extended to the friends of his children and the people he interacted with daily. He will be long remembered and missed, and his legacy will live on through his descendants who were blessed to share this mortal plane with such a truly great man.
