Victorine A. Mathis

July 14, 1911 — May 7, 2018

Victorine Angelina Williams was born on July 14th 1911 to the Reverend James H. & Martha Theresa Williams in Stanleytown West Demerara, Guyana S.A. Her father was the pastor of Bethesda Congregational Church. Her earliest memories were of attending with her entire family. Young Victorine began her education by attending Scotch Church School and later Devonish High School in Georgetown. She majored in music at Seaton's College graduating in June 1929. In December she migrated to New York City where she reunited with her widowed mother, brother Charles and joined Bethel AME Church. In 1930, she met and married William Reeder Taylor. Their union produced 13 children: William, Charles, Shirley, Robert, Helen, Inez, Frances, Alfred, Vincent, Walter, Patricia, Christine and Ruth. Widowed in 1950, Victorine returned to school and obtained her Nursing degree from New York University Medical School. She worked at NYU Hospital until her retirement in 1976. Sister Mathis enjoyed traveling and did so often enough to have seen most of the world, including a pilgrimage to the Holy Land where she spent 18 days "walking" the Bible. But she always found time to devote to her first loves, which were the church and family. Sister Mathis was a shining light at Bethel AME in Harlem, New York; a church class leader, a missionary, a member of the Mother's Club, Women's Club, the Sons & Daughters of the King, and The Altar Volunteers, which her mother organized and presided over until her death. In 1980, Victorine migrated again, this time to EI Paso, Texas, joining her daughters and grandchildren. In 1985, she met and married Deacon Charles B. Mathis and joined Mt Zion Baptist Church. Under the leadership of Reverend James Larry Williams, Sister Mathis became a member of the Sanctuary Choir, the Deacons & Ministers Wives Auxiliary, the Nurses Guild, and the Pastor's Aide. Sister Mathis spent her life serving the churches she was affiliated with, was a caring and loving woman who loved the Lord and was loved by those who knew her. Daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, and friend. Sister Mathis was preceded in death by 7 of her children. She leaves to mourn her six surviving children, William, Helen, Alfred, Walter, Patricia, and Ruth, stepdaughter Beverly, along with 123 descendants including grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-¬great grandchildren, nephews and nieces, near-kin and countless fellow journeymen, whom she simply called friends.
