Major Wilber E. “Sandy” Sanford, 97, U.S. Army Retired was born February 12, 1916 in Minden, Nebraska to Vera Dean Bates and George Franklin Sanford, one of their eight children. He passed away February 10, 2014. He finished high school in Hastings, Nebraska and received his Bachelor of Science in Education at The University of Texas at El Paso. He joined the U.S. Army on January 5, 1937, serving more than 30 years of active duty including World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. Other assignments took him to numerous places in the world, his last station being Fort Bliss where he retired in 1968. He then entered Civil Service where at the request of the Commanding General he founded and was Editor of the “Air Defense Magazine�� for 15 years which was circulated world wide. He retired from Civil Service in 1982. He was preceded in death by his son, Wilbur E. “Skip” Sanford, II and seven brothers and sisters. He is survived by his beloved wife, June of 29 years; daughter, Sandra and her husband, Paul Holmes of Denver, Colorado; son, Douglas Sanford and his wife, Shelia of Austin, Texas; two granddaughters; a great-grandson; and two great-granddaughters, all of Denver, Colorado. Visitation will be held from 12:00-1:00 pm with Funeral Services to begin at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast.
