After a lengthy illness, Caridad Garcia Diesto peacefully passed from this world on Saturday, July 14, 2018, following her 96th birthday. The last remaining child of 10 siblings born to Enrique and Antonia de los Santos Garcia of Tuao, Cagayan, Philippines, she married Rogerio de la Cruz Diesto on July 11, 1945. Sons Edgar and Robert, were born soon after. Upon graduating from Philippine Womens University, she and her two sons, joined Rogerio, who had enlisted in the US Army after World War II, in Sendai, Japan where he was stationed. She arrived in America in 1954 when Rogerio was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. They were transferred to Rossford, Ohio before finally arriving in El Paso, Texas in 1956 when Rogerio was assigned to White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. Their youngest son, Richie, was born in El Paso. The family would remain in El Paso for the next 62 years, with the exception of one year tour of duty at West Point, NY where Rogerio joined the instructional staff of the Engineering Department at the US Military Academy. She dedicated her life to creating a loving, nurturing home for her family and enjoyed the friendship of a small but close community of friends who, like her, came from the Philippines and chose El Paso as their home. She was a devoted wife, mother, doting grandmother, a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church community, and founding member of the Filipino American Association of El Paso where she, along with Rogerio, held various postions of leadership.
Rogerio preceded her in death in October 1991, but are now reunited with the LORD. She is survived by her three sons and their families, Edgar and Elenor Diesto of Plano, Texas; Robert and Kathy Diesto of Anaheim, California; and Richie and Easter Diesto of Frisco, Texas. She showered her love on 6 grandchildren (Gina, Jimmy, Lyndsay, Shannon, Austin, and Camryn) and 4 great- grandchildren (Savanna, Katy, Ethan, and Lily). She will be missed not only by her loving family but by the Filipino community in El Paso who knew her and were her lifelong friends.
