Dolores Blanquet, known as “Lolita” to friends and family, was born September 16, 1927 to Celsa and Francisco Torrez in Elkhart, Illinois and passed away April 12, 2018 in El Paso, TX. After her mother’s death, Dolores relocated to Mexico with her father who later died of a broken heart; leaving Dolores orphaned at age three.
In 1940 she married Prudencio Blanquet, a union which lasted until her husband’s death in 1999. Working as a machinist at Hortex Manufacturing, she led the way to unionization. She is remembered by friends cultivated over 43 years as someone who inspired the best in anyone, a personality who drew people to her like a garden draws bees and butterflies.
Although Dolores never received an education, she is remembered as a driven and caring provider whom raised two daughters, Julieta (Bernie) Ramos and Rosamaria (Andres) Arriola; and son, Arturo Blanquet. As her children started families, Dolores helped raise 6 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Dolores is survived by daughters: Julieta and Rosamaria; grandchildren: Sylvia (Lonnie) Britton, Bernie Jr. (Yvette) Ramos, Amy (David) Alvadro, Adrian (Sheryl) Ramos, and Myra (Robert) Aguero; and great-grandchildren: Jonathan, Christopher, Brianna, Ryan, Amber, X’avier, Julian, Madeline, Anthony, Celes, and Leana.
