Elifas Sanchez Zamora went to be with his Lord on February 21, 2018 after a valiant fight against multiple afflictions. Born in Garfield, NM, on July 17, 1930, he served in the Army during the Korean War, after which he worked for Kennecott Corporation at the Santa Rita copper mine as he pursued a degree in Education from Western New Mexico University. Upon graduating in 1960, he became a teacher for the El Paso Independent School District. After earning a Master’s degree in Education from Texas Western University, he was promoted to assistant principal of Rusk Elementary School and subsequently to Principal of Zavala and Alamo Elementary Schools. He was a highly respected educator known for dedication to his students, the members of his faculty, and the communities surrounding his schools. He was Past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Council 4497 and a faithful member of Most Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Carmen M. Zamora, three children (Gloria Keethler [Greg], Samuel Zamora, and David M. Zamora), four grandchildren (Benjamin Keethler [Erin], Nathan Keethler [Shea], David A. Zamora, and Marissa Zamora), four great grandchildren (Collin, Sammy, Myra, and Keira Keethler), brother Thomas Zamora [Jenny], and sisters Elena Hernandez [d-Manuel], Genoveva Martinez [d-Gilbert], Aurora Mendoza [Alex], Eloisa Maldonado, and Rosemary Arellano. He was preceeded in death by his father, Thomas P. Zamora, mother Rosa S. Zamora, brothers Jesus Zamora [d-Carmen] and Robert Zamora [Gloria] and sister Elvira Walters [d-Sonny].
Visitation will be from 10:00am to 11:00am followed by a Vigil/Rosary at 11 am Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast 4631 Hondo Pass Drive. Funeral Mass to begin at 12:30pm at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 10000 Pheasant Road. Committal Service to follow at 1:30pm at Ft Bliss National Cemetery.
