Eloise Smith Cook

February 15, 1927 — October 27, 2020

Eloise Smith Cook, 93, passed away on October 27, 2020 in El Paso,TX. Eloise was born in El Paso, Texas to Lizandro and Ramona, and loved by her stepfather Sidney Smith. Eloise grew up with two sisters: Julie and Amelia who fondly called her “Locha”. In her childhood with her sisters, she made El Paso her playground, riding her bike all over, even as far as Hueco Tanks. As a young woman, you could find her dressed up ready to attend any dance she could. Eloise graduated from El Paso High School and went on to attend Texas Western University and Tulane University Nursing School in New Orleans, Louisiana. After returning to El Paso from nursing school, Eloise met and married Paul J. Cook, also of El Paso, and they started their family, having daughter Pam. Eloise, Paul, and Pam travelled the country and the world while Paul served in the United States Army. Everywhere Eloise and Paul travelled they embraced the food, the culture, and Eloise especially loved the fashion. Upon again returning to El Paso, Eloise brought her style to the classroom and began her teaching career. Eloise was a beloved teacher at Lincoln Elementary School, Burleson Elementary School, and Rusk Elementary School. Some of her fondest memories from her life were about her family, her travels, and her former students. As a wife, Eloise was a loving, supportive, and dedicated wife. Eloise and Paul were a couple always on the dancefloor, dancing as one and floating around the room. As a mother, Eloise fostered Pam’s imagination, a love of animals, and took pride in Pam’s accomplishments as an educator and a mother. As a grandmother to Christine and Elizabeth, Eloise encouraged their creative curiosities, supported their every activity and wonder, and loved them unconditionally. In her lifetime, Eloise was an avid golfer and bridge player, and could hustle with some of the best! She was a devout Catholic, instilling her deep love for the Lord and Holy Trinity in her daughter and granddaughters. Eloise loved her family deeply and she was loved deeply. She remained imaginative and vibrant throughout her life and is remembered as vivacious and happy. Eloise is preceded in death by her sister Julie and her husband Paul. Eloise is survived by her daughter Pam Howard Roewe, her two granddaughters Elizabeth Howard and Christine Howard, and her sister Amelia “Dada” Clarke. She will always be loved tremendously. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Diocese of El Paso.
