Evelyn Schwartz

July 11, 1928 — December 3, 2013

Evelyn Goldberg Schwartz, 85, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on December 2, 2013, after a short but courageous battle with acute leukemia. Evelyn was born in San Antonio on July 11, 1928 to Abe and Frieda Goldberg. The oldest of three daughters, she graduated from Jefferson High School in San Antonio and attended the University of Texas, where she met the love of her life, Edward Schwartz, when she was 17. They married on June 25, 1949 and moved to El Paso where Edward began his career at The Popular. Edward and Evelyn were married for 64 years. Evelyn will always be remembered for her keen mind, her sense of humor, her strong opinions (which she freely shared with others) and the sage advice she dispensed to friends and family. She was the consummate mother and grandmother, genuinely interested in everyone's adventures. Yet throughout her life she always found time to volunteer: for Providence Hospital for over 40 years, the YWCA, Temple Mt. Sinai Sisterhood, Drive-A-Meal and many other organizations. She shared Edward’s sense of family with the many employees of The Popular and played a major role in ensuring The Popular’s commitment to the El Paso community. Evelyn lived her life full of compassion, grace, dignity, beauty, and a zeal for experiencing the fullness that life has to offer. She led by example, always putting others first and regularly performing acts of kindness for friends, acquaintances and even people whom she hardly knew. Whether affectionately called Nina, Tia, Evelina, Bevlie or Evie, Evelyn was a mother figure, mentor and role model to not only her own children and grandchildren but also the friends of her children and the children of her friends. Evelyn was preceded in death by Edward who passed away on July 29th, 2013, her sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Aaron Cohen and her brother-in-law Isadore Tudzin. She is survived by her four children and their families: Alan E. Schwartz and his wife Gail and their children Brendan and Donald Ash, Aime Schwartz and Rachel Schwartz; Jane S. Snow and her husband Bob and their children Erin Snow, Whitney and Tim Hegeman, and Carrie Snow; Stuart R. Schwartz and his wife Shari and their children Jason and Jennifer Schwartz and Jeffrey Schwartz; and Elizabeth S. Weigand and her husband Mike and their children Madison Weigand and Brooke Weigand. She is also survived by her sister Shirley Tudzin of San Antonio, her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Ann and Tibor Schaechner, and two great-grandchildren, Shannon and Tripper Ash, along with numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and life-long friends. Graveside services will be held at Temple Mt. Sinai Cemetery, 3911 Gateway West on Wednesday, December 4 at 1:00 P.M. Evelyn’s family would like to thank her devoted caregivers, Nancy Centeno, Elsa Munoz and Alma Madrid, as well as Josefa Madrid. Donations in Evelyn’s memory can be made to the Evelyn and Edward Schwartz Fund at the El Paso Symphony Orchestra, P.O. Box 180, El Paso, Texas 79942, the YWCA, 201 E.
