Guadalupe Caraveo

March 26, 1934 — June 30, 2018

Guadalupe “Lupe” Caraveo passed away peacefully on June 30, 2018, in Houston, Texas at the age of 84. She was born in El Paso, Texas on February 26, 1934 to Celso Cartagena and Guadalupe Martinez. She was educated by the Sisters of Loretto at St. Mary’s School and St. Joseph High School. Lupe met her future husband, Oscar, when they were children and first married him at a church bazaar when she was ten and he was eleven years old. They dated years later and married on July 27, 1956. Together they had three children. Lupe wanted to be a nurse, but the Lord had other plans for her. She found her way to teaching by first becoming a teacher’s aid and eventually earning her teaching certification. She was a culinary arts teacher at Tech Center before moving to the YISD Central Office. Her class program gained attention nationwide and she was selected as a Teacher of the Year. Lupe was an extremely talented person. She had a beautiful voice and was graceful on the dance floor. She could sew, draw and cook—all skills she would put to use when she began making wedding cakes and eventually opening her catering company. G.C. Catering. Her attention to detail and elegant sense of style became her signature and she created countless weddings, receptions and parties not just in the El Paso/Juarez area but coast to coast and Mexico. Lupe was a dedicated teacher and mentor and it warmed her heart to see so many of her students go into the hospitality field and other fields and succeed. She always encouraged people to dream big and work hard. She followed this advice and achieved many of her goals for herself and her family. Lupe faced many challenges but she believed you had to have faith – when you came to the edge of the cliff, you had to believe one of two things would happen. You would step off the edge, fall and there would be someone to catch you or step off and fly. Lupe stepped off the cliff edge many times and more often than not, took some of us with her. It was always an adventure and taught us to be brave. She was a loving wife and an amazing mother. She served as a scout leader, home room mom, chaperoned her children’s trips and was their biggest cheerleader in everything they were involved in. Everyone that came to her home always found a warm welcome and delicious meal. Lupe was preceded in death by her parents, step-father and younger sister, Gloria Delgado. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Oscar, and children: Patsi, Oscar, Jr. (Rebecca), Hector and stepson, Rudy (Juanita). She is also survived by her sister, Grace Soto, Brother, Dr. Bernardo Cordova, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, niece, nephews and countless friends and students. The family would like to thank the staffs at We Are Family Home and Silverado Hospice in Houston for their care and attention to Lupe during her final months. Following a cremation, a rosary and mass will take on Saturday, August 11th at 1:30 pm at Sunset Funeral Home, 480 N. Resler, El Paso, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Loretto Academy Scholarship Fund, 1300 Hardaway, El Paso, Texas 79903, or a charity of your choice.
