Johnny McGoldrick Sr passed away on Monday, February 4, 2019. Johnny was born in San Antonio, Texas on September 22, 1931 to Walter J. and Margarita McGoldrick. Johnny served as a corporal in the US Army with the 79th Transportation Company at Fort Lawton, Washington before being deployed to Korea. After the war, he was a Sergeant in the Marine Corps Reserve with the 19th Rifle Company in El Paso. He was a member of Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Parish. Johnny retired from civil service at Fort Bliss where he worked as a tactical vehicle mechanic. He coached little league baseball/softball teams in the Logan Heights neighborhood. Johnny loved to fish, watch boxing and the Dallas Cowboys until Coach Landry was fired.
Johnny was married to Angela Almeraz for 50 years, until she passed away from pulmonary fibrosis. They had four children Johnny Jr., Richard, Andrew and Theresa (Matthew Turner). They have 4 grandchildren: Rudy (April), Angela (Francisco Cuellar), Vincent and Scott Turner. They currently have 5 great-grandchildren, Mariana, Audrina, Ismyella, Tillie, Mya and are expecting a boy in March.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Tommy and Walter Jr. He is survived by his sisters Annie Wasicki, Virginia Saavedra, Sister Mary Judith, brother Frank (Patricia) McGoldrick.
The family would like to thank many workers who cared for him over the past 7 years while he was a resident of Sun Ridge at Desert Springs. We are grateful to Dr. Arianna Bender for her medical care as he dealt with Alzheimer’s disease and Hospice of El Paso for their care and compassion especially Amy Selph, his nurse, for the excellent care she provided him. Visitation: 5:00pm to 9:00pm, Vigil/Rosary: 7:00pm on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast. Funeral Mass: 12:30pm on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, 4805 Byron. Committal Service: 1:30 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.
