Socorro Johnson, September 10, 1928 - November 11, 2017 was born in Zacatecas, Mexico. She grew up in Felipe Pescador and sold tacos and tamales to travelers on the train with her grandfather. As a young woman in Ciudad Juarez she worked as a nurse’s aide at Centro Medico. Socorro and her husband Phillip were married on September 29, 1961 in Las Cruces, New Mexico, then spent time with her husband's family in Indiana in the 1960’s. Socorro was a great cook and loved preparing meals for everyone. She enjoyed preparing tamales with her mother and sisters each New Year at her home in Northeast El Paso. Socorro grew plants and flowers and gave them to family and friends. She was a happy and colorful woman who enjoyed music, parties and going to casinos, hiking on the mountains and playing cards and dominoes. She leaves her husband of 56 years, Philip; a sister, Ernestina; brother, Manuel; a daughter and three sons, Rosa, Carlos, Felipe and George; two grandchildren, Michelle and Nicholas; and two great grandchildren, Lily Grace and Edmund; sister-in-law Inés; nieces and nephews, Walter, Hugo, Homar, Chela, Marisa, Hector, Nathaly, Lourdes, and Alejandra. Many thanks to Socorro’s caregivers and the staff at WBAMC and DaVita. Gathering of Remembrance will be from 11:00am-12:30pm on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast. Funeral Mass will be said at 1:00pm on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Committal Service will follow at 2:00pm at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
