Wilma E. Norbeck

February 18, 1928 — November 7, 2018

Wilma Ellen Norbeck passed away peacefully at the University Medical Center on November 7, 2019 at the young age of 90. Wilma was born in Continental, Ohio to Frederick and Minnie Meads. She was delivered at home by her father. She grew up in Delphos, Ohio during the eventful years of the Great Depression and the Second World War. Wilma graduated Jefferson High School in 1946 where she excelled as a student and as a musician. She played the clarinet in the High School band and sang in school and church choirs. In 1949 she married Jack Edward Norbeck and together the young couple worked side-by-side renovating a one-hundred-year-old home. In 1950, with the help of the G.I. Bill her husband became the first person in his family to earn a college degree and Wilma played a profound supporting role in his success. After college the couple moved to Cleveland, Ohio where Wilma worked and had her first child, Mark. From there the couple moved to El Paso, Texas in 1959 where another child, Carol was born. Jack worked as a physicist/engineer at White Sands Missile Range for the next thirty-years and again Wilma played a sustaining role. In the meantime, Wilma worked at William Beaumont Hospital temporarily and then built a wonderful life for her husband and children. In 1959 she joined Highland Presbyterian whose members quickly became part of her family. She sang in the choir for over 50 years and was loyal member and officer of the Presbyterian Women’s Association. She was also an ordained elder in the church. Wilma lived a profound Christian life. She was particularly fond of quietly helping the elderly. For years she drove a number of older folks to their doctor’s appointments. In addition to the elderly, Wilma also opened up her heart and home to neighborhood children. They played at her house, she listened to their problems and bandaged their wounds. She put up with countless teenage Ping Pong Parties that lasted deep into the night and even allowed the entire UTEP Band to come into her home twice for Halloween Parties! Wilma always had a fun, open and loving soul. Wilma Norbeck is survived by sister Mary Jane Huling, her son Mark and his wife Maria and their daughter Addysen. She is also survived by her daughter Carol and her husband Walter and their son Steven. One last note, Wilma was deeply proud of her grandchildren, Stephen and Addysen. Stephen connected with his grandfather’s love of science and became an Aerospace Engineer. Addysen, on the other hand is still in school, but seems to be following in Wilma’s footsteps with a great love of the arts and athletics. Wilma loved all her friends and her entire family and they loved her back. She is already deeply missed.
