Our hearts break as we share the news that Alicia Baeza Vargas, a beautiful soul, left this world on March 11, 2026, at the age of 90. Alicia was born in Deming, New Mexico on October 28, 1935. She lived there with her parents, Luis and Maria Baeza and her 9 brothers and sisters. She attended Deming High School where she excelled in academics, earning her an opportunity to attend Nursing school. More importantly, Deming, New Mexico is where she met the love of her life, her husband Manuel (Manny). Alicia first saw Manny on the playground at the age of 10, and she knew he would be hers forever. They married on November 8, 1957, and they have been devoted to each other for a precious 68 years of marriage-a true rarity in today’s world. They began their journey together first by living in Deming, New Mexico and then moving to El Paso, Texas. As a housewife and mother, Alicia supported her husband, Manny, while she also cherished and nurtured her three sons-David John, Paul Gabriel, and Patrick Baeza. She shared their joys and guided them through their sorrows. She gave wonderful advice that impacted and enriched her sons' lives forever. As her sons married, she gained three daughters-Endi, Jayne, and Anne. Alicia enjoyed bonding with her daughters-in-laws by sharing her sons' youthful escapades in the hope that these stories would be passed down for generations. Alicia experienced an even deeper love when her life was blessed with four grandchildren-Gabriel, Michael, Kelsey, and Mary. Her love for her grandchildren was without limit. Her eyes sparkled with happiness as she witnessed her grandchildren create loving lives of their own. She cherished monthly phone calls from her grandchildren as they shared stories from their happy and busy lives. Especially treasured were the words, “I love you,” at the end of each conversation. Alicia's world grew even larger when she became a Great Grandmother to Vivienne, Theodore, and Luca. She retained a sense of youth by seeing the world through the eyes of her great grandchildren. Alicia was an amazing and incredible wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her passing has created a void in the lives of all who knew her. She will be greatly missed by her loved ones, but her memory will be the light that guides and steadies their steps as they navigate through these days of grief.
Alicia is preceded in death by her parents, Luis and Maria Baeza, and her brothers-Sebastian Campos, Rudy Baeza, Luis Baeza- and her sisters-Nena Campos, Jessie Alvarez, Adelina Moreno, Mary Lou Baeza, Leandra Valverde, and Amelia Mendoza- and sadly her youngest son, Patrick Baeza Vargas. She is survived by her husband, Manuel Vargas, her sons- David John Vargas MD (wife Jayne), and Paul Gabriel Vargas (wife Endi)-grandchildren Army Captain Gabriel Kegan Vargas MD (wife Vanessa), John Michael Vargas(wife Katie), Kelsey Denise Vargas MD, and Mary Vargas DO- and great-grandchildren-Vivienne Joy Vargas, Theodore Manuel Vargas, and John Luca Vargas.
Pallbearers will be Gabriel Vargas, Michael Vargas, Kelsey Vargas, Mary Vargas, Christian Ramsburg, Darrel Petry, Honorary Pallbearers, Daniel Ordaz and Greg Burns.
Alicia was a fierce protector and advocate for all animals; so in Lieu of flowers, please donate to the animal shelter of your choice in the name of Alicia Baeza Vargas.
