Alyce M. Burmeister
February 5, 1926 ~ February 8, 2016
Beloved sister, friend, mentor, Alyce M. Burmeister was born to Marvin Robert and Myrtle Smith Burmeister on February 5th, 1926 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She attended the Milwaukee public schools and received a bachelor’s degree from what is now the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
In her younger years she was a violinist. For many years she loved skiing, horseback riding, gardening, traveling, and opera. Throughout her lifetime she was an avid reader.
She was a professor of Art and Art History at the State University of New York in Oneonta, and as part of her duty there she was an administrator of an art school in Paris, France. Her paintings and silk-screens may be found in distinguished galleries, even in the Governor’s Mansion in New York. Upon retirement, she was granted the status of Emeritus Professor of Art.
She then moved to El Paso to be near her sister Lou Ella Burmeister, who survives her. She is also survived by her cousins Betty (Mrs. Ralph) Gehrmann and family of Wisconsin and Marian (Mrs. John) White and family of Florida. She was godmother of Pamila White, deceased.
Her family wishes to express its gratitude to her many friends, including those at University Presbyterian Church, of which she is a member. Special gratitude is extended to the Rev. Dr. John Nelsen, pastor, for his generous spirit of caring and his ability to comfort her.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to University Presbyterian Church or to your favorite charity. Services will be held on Sunday, February 14, 2016 at 2:00 pm at University Presbyterian Church, 244 N. Resler Dr. 79912.
