Arland R. “Mickey” Walker, 85, passed away in El Paso on June 21, 2016, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. Mickey was a child of the Great Depression, born in Houston to a welder, and frequently moving around Texas and California. He maintained close ties to his sister and three brothers through the decades. After proudly serving on the heavy cruiser U.S.S. Des Moines from 1951-1954, Mickey married Barbara Callis from the Rio Grande Valley and moved to Austin. After owning a gas station in Austin, Mickey spent most of his work life with the Texas Water Development Board, retiring as head of the Graphic Arts Division. In thanks for his work on the Texas Water Plan, Governor Price Daniel commissioned Mickey as an Admiral of the Texas Navy. Mickey was a lifelong lover of the outdoors, and loved to hunt and fish with his family. He enjoyed antiques, old coins, gardening, and wood carving, particularly birds, and instilling the values of hard work. Mickey is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Barbara; son Michael and his wife, Cheryl; grandchildren Brandon and Tyler Walker, and their wives, Ashley and Alissa; and son Mark and his wife, Kathleen. Services in remembrance of his life will be held at the Sunset Funeral Home, 480 N. Resler, El Paso, Texas, at noon on Sunday, June 26.
