Bertha Alcala-Mason

June 7, 1951 — March 31, 2023

El Paso

Bertha Alcala-Mason, graced this Earth June 7, 1951 in Cd. Juarez, Chihuahua to Aurelia and Jose Alcala. She proudly became a US citizen in elementary school and went on to graduate from Austin High School, Class of 1969. She married and moved around the US and the world. She fulfilled her lifelong law enforcement dream, by becoming one of the first female police officers in the Montgomery Police Department, all while raising 4 kids. She furthered her law enforcement dreams by becoming an INS Officer and eventually a CBP officer. Ultimately retiring from US Border Patrol, she was able to spend all of her time with her grandbabies and the love of her life, Gabe. In her spare time she loved crocheting, sewing, Las Vegas and working in the court system as a CASA advocate and EVERYTHING Betty Boop. She also loved to travel. Her many plates and crosses from around the world are a testament to her love of discovering new places. If she considered you family, then you knew nothing but love and thoughtfulness. She never forgot birthdays, and holidays were her personal specialty. Christmas at her house was a truly magical experience and she took her job as Grandma seriously. There is nothing she enjoyed more than being with her family. Bertha was also an ardent animal lover. Throughout her adult life, Bertha was forever bringing home strays and had a menagerie of animals. There really is no describing the hole Bertha’s passing has left in her family’s world.

Bertha was preceded in death by her Mom and Dad, Jose and Aurelia, brothers Jose Angel and Rafael. She leaves behind her husband, Gabriel Mason. Children, CS “Sam” (Cynde), Tiffany (Joel), Natalie (Matt)and Robert (Myrna), Ian and Samantha. Siblings Jose Pilar (Maria+) Maria Luisa (Ray+), Josie Alcala, Josefina, Francisco Xavier, Eduardo, and Patricia and son Ricky. 15 Grandchildren, 8 Great-grandbabies numerous nieces and nephews and countless cousins.
