In Loving Memory of Berthold "Bert" Walter Smith
Berthold "Bert" Walter Smith, age 70, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, July 30, 2026, in El Paso, Texas. He was a wonderful husband, father, son, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He will be dearly missed.
Bert was a fighter. He fought until the very end with tremendous courage and strength. Even during the most difficult times, he never wanted to give up. He faced each challenge with determination and gave everything he had. His courage, strength, and will to keep going were an inspiration to his family and to all who loved him.
Family meant so much to Bert. The people he loved were an important part of his life, and the memories they created together will remain in their hearts forever. His presence, his laughter, and the love he gave will never be forgotten.
Bert was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald Smith and Ilse Smith, and his siblings, Lillie Smith and Johnny Guillen.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra Smith; his children, Harold Smith (wife, llaeja), Stephanie Cunningham, and Jennifer Burleson; and his siblings, Rita Gluck (husband, Ernie Gluck), David Smith, and Stephen Eaton (wife, Delfina).
He is also survived by his nephews and niece, Jerry Phipps, John Spears, Dustin Smith, Casey Smith, and Theresa Smith; his grandchildren, Zachariah Smith, Jonah Shives, Lucy Mireles, Joe Mireles, Liorah Smith, Dillon Tucker, Mathew Tucker, Shanda Cunningham, and Noah Burleson; and his great-grandson, Dillon Tucker. He is also survived by many extended family members and dear friends who will cherish his memory.
Bert leaves behind a lasting legacy of love, courage, strength, and devotion to family. Though he will be greatly missed, the love he shared and the memories he created will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Bert's graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
