Command Sergeant Major (RET.) BILLY W. COLEMAN (April 16, 1932 - November 23, 2014), age 82, passed away November 23, 2014. He served in the US Army for over 28 years and was a Korean War Veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Pearl Coleman along with brother Ernest Jr. and sister Joyce. He was born in Cordova, NC and after all these years still considered it home.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 60 years, Fumiko; along with his three children, Linda, Thomas, and Robert (Becky); 5 grand children and 3 great grandchildren; brother, Dennis (Dink) of Rockingham, NC and sister, Kay from Flint, MI.
Mr. Coleman was a CSM of the 1st ADA Training Brigade when he retired in 1978. He also worked in Civil Service where he retired as Chief of NCOES. He really loved that job and always talked about the great bunch of soldiers and civilians that made NCOES a very special place to work at on Ft. Bliss
Mr. Coleman was a Red Cross volunteer at William Beaumont Hospital who drove the golf cart in the parking lot for several years and also worked as a Marshal at the Ft. Bliss golf course. He was also a member of most veteran organizations. He worked very diligently for veteran benefits. In 2002, Mr. Coleman became the first enlisted soldier inducted into the Ft. Bliss Hall of Fame. He was also the recipient of numerous awards and decorations during his Army career to include the CIB and Purple Heart (Korea) as well as numerous Civil Service awards and commendations.
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Candlelighters of El Paso Area for Children with Cancer or to the charity of your choosing. The family would like to thank the staff at the Ambrosio Guillen Vet Home for the care and compassion that they provided.
Visitation will be held from 5:00pm to 9:00pm with a Prayer Service at 7:00pm on Wednesday, November 26th at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast, 4631 Hondo Pass, 79904.
