Carlos Hernandez — A Life of Quiet Grace and Deep Faith

Carlos’s life journey came full circle in Spain, where he set out on a

300-mile pilgrimage in search of solitude, nature, and a deeper

connection with God. Along the Camino, he reflected on his life, his

family, and all that was most precious to him. He stayed in touch with

his sister Margie through texts and calls — sharing joy, exhaustion,

and a profound peace that only such a journey can bring.

Though he loved walking alongside others, Carlos especially cherished

the solitude of the trail — those sacred miles when he felt he wasn’t

alone, but walking beside his Creator.

On June 6, 2025, Carlos went home and finished his earthly journey

with the same quiet strength and humility that defined his life.

Carlos was a lifelong hiker, drawn to the mountains and desert trails

around El Paso and far beyond. Whether walking with local hiking

groups or striking out on his own, the rhythm of the trail was where

Carlos found joy, clarity, and connection. He also loved to travel —

seeking out new places, new people, and fresh perspectives that

deepened his understanding of the world and himself.

Professionally, Carlos dedicated a significant portion of his life to

helping others, working as a counselor and social worker. He was a

graduate of Andress High School, where he got a cross-country track

scholarship to Ranger College in Texas. He placed third in the state

in a cross-country track meet. Carlos got his master's degree from Our

Lady of the Lake in San Antonio.

Carlos was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Maria Julia

Carreon-Hernandez; his father, Juan Hernandez; and his sister, Irene

Suniga.

He is survived by his sons, Carlos Marcelo Hernandez and Gabriel

Hernandez, his brothers, Raul, John, and Frank Hernandez, and his

sister, Margarita “Margie” Gonzalez.

His granddaughter, Melissa Hernandez

In his 75 years, Carlos touched many lives with his kindness, wisdom,

and faith. He never forced his beliefs on anyone — but for those who

asked, he gladly spoke of the Savior who shaped his life: Jesus

Christ, his greatest hero and constant companion on the road.

As it is written in 2 Timothy 4:7:

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

And when Carlos finished that race, we believe he heard:

“Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your

Lord.” — Matthew 25:21

One day, we’ll catch up with him again — just around the bend in the trail.
