Carlos H. Zapata, 91, passed away on Sunday, March 26, 2023.

Carlos was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on November 16, 1931.  He graduated from Vila Mayo High School in Rio Piedras, PR and attended university there before joining the United States Army in 1950.  He proudly served his country in the field of Military Intelligence, attaining the rank of CW4, retiring from the Army in 1978.  During this time, he met Araceli, who would become his wife in 1961; they would be married 59 years before her passing in 2020.

After retiring from the Army, Carlos became a Teacher for the EPISD, and took great pride in teaching his students in the Math department at Andress High School for many years.  Aside from teaching, one of his favorite hobbies was photography, and he enjoyed taking pictures of his family and the El Paso area.  He especially loved doting on his special needs daughter, Sonja.

Carlos was preceded in death by his parents, Francisco Zapata and Ana Maldonado; and his wife, Araceli.  He leaves behind his daughters, Sonja Zapata and Ana Newcomer, and two grandchildren, Alexandra and Michael Newcomer.

A memorial service with military honors will be held for Carlos on Friday, May 5, 2023 at 1:30pm at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
