Catherine L. Burger, 90, completed her life on earth on May 17, 2015 in El Paso, Texas. Born in 1924 in Dennison, Texas to Bertine (Bert) Steffensky and his wife Mary nee Murphy, she grew up in Detroit with her parents, two sisters, Clara and Georgia, and brother Bert. She later married Texan John Michael Althoff, an Army veteran, and lived in College Station while John completed his degree at Texas A&M University. The couple eventually made their way to El Paso where they raised four children. Catherine was a homemaker, a long-time volunteer at Hotel Dieu Hospital and a woman of great faith. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and often said that if she ever won the lottery she would buy new pews for the congregation because “these are so old and creaky, I can’t hear a thing the priest is saying.” She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband John, who she buried in 1994, and second husband Arthur Burger. She is survived by her four children, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Since she never got around to playing the lottery, Catherine would be delighted if you would make a contribution in her name to Immaculate Conception Church for maintenance! Hers was a life well-lived and she will be sorely missed by those who loved her. Rite of the Christian Mass will be held on Monday, June 8, 2015 at 12:00PM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 118 N. Campbell. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home-West.
