Edwin Coats of El Paso, Texas, age 88, entered eternal rest on August 26, 2026. He was born in Carlsbad, New Mexico on June 26, 1938, to Fred and Ahniwa Coats. Edwin is a graduate of Miami High School. A turning point happened while he was still a student, when brother Mack Kercheville held a meeting at the Globe church of Christ where he and his mother attended. This was instrumental in his obeying the gospel and being baptized. Later, Edwin attended the University of Arizona in Tucson for two years. While in Arizona, he went on to work underground at Superior Copper Mine.
Later, he attended Abilene Christian College from 1961 to 1963. It was at Albilene Christian College that he met his beloved wife, Jamie in 1962. They were soon married on September 6, 1963. Shortly after, he and Jamie moved to El Paso, Texas where Edwin attended UTEP from 1963-1965. Upon graduation, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona to work for Motorola SPD. His family expanded there when his sons Keith and Craig were born in 1966 and 1970.
To assist his father and brother-in-law, he moved his family to Wilcox in 1973, working at Coats Construction, building pole barns. Two years later, he and his family moved back to El Paso where he and Jamie managed a 100-unit apartment complex. During this time, he received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry, minoring in math. Mrs. Coats also received her teaching degree.
Soon, Edwin started teaching at Canutillo High School in 1981. He taught all levels of math and retired after 25 years.
Afterward, he enjoyed doing woodworking projects and taking his dog, Bella, to the desert for runs and walks.
Throughout his life, he continued being a faithful Christian, teaching various classes and accomplishing additional duties of the church.
Edwin is preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Carolyn. He is survived by his beloved wife: Jamie Coats, his sons: Keith Coats and Craig Coats (Suzanne), and his five grandchildren, including Michele, mother of Kenzy, Jazzlyn, Mychal, Christian (Keely), and Jacob Coats (Melissa). He is also survived by many extended friends and family to cherish and honor his memory.
