Elena A. Martinez, 100, a resident of El Paso passed away on Sunday, Oct 29, 2006 in a local hospital.  She was born August 18, 1906 in Chihuahua, Mexico. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin Acosta and Rosa Aguirre; her husband, Esteban R. Martinez; her daughter, Norma Elena Martinez-Adkins; two sisters; and two brothers. She was a very talented person who in her youth played the piano. In her later years, she was interested in pencil drawings of flowers. In her advance years, she kept a journal and was up to date in U.S. and Mexican politics, Mexican artists, and television personalities. She also volunteered at Cathedral High School while her son attended school there. She is survived by: her son, Ernesto D. Martinez and his wife, Blanche Flores Martinez; and son-in-law, Wade Adkins (husband of deceased daughter, Norma). She is also survived by: her grandson, Edmond D. Martinez and his wife, Bernadette Bonilla Martinez; granddaughter, Michelle Marie Perez and her husband, Capt. Samuel Perez Jr., USN; grandson, Edward D. Martinez and his wife, Barbara Candelaria Martinez; granddaughter, Rachel Adkins Avato and her husband, Peter Avato; grandson, Stephen Adkins; her 10 great grandchildren: Jessica, Stephanie, and Samantha Perez; Christina, Edmond Jr., Vincent and Lauren Martinez;  Evan Daniel, Mary Louise, and Sarah Danielle Martinez; and by a niece, Marina Acosta-Strawser, of Cray, North Carolina and her daughter, Becky. The pallbearers will be: Edmond Martinez Sr., Edmond Martinez Jr., Edward D. Martinez, Stephen Adkins, Peter Avato, and Samuel Perez Sr. Honorary pallbearers will be: Wade Adkins and Capt. Samuel Perez Jr., USN. Serving during Mass will be her great-grand children: Christina, Vincent, and Lauren Martinez; and Evan, Mary, and Sarah Martinez. Visitation will be held from 5-9 p.m. with a Rosary/Vigil to begin at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, November 2, 2006 at Sunset Funeral Home-Northeast. Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 3, 2006 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cathedral High School Scholarship Fund, 1309 N. Stanton Street, El Paso, Texas 79902. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home-Northeast.
