In Loving Memory of Ernestina Stevens
Ernestina Stevens, 90, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2025, in El Paso, Texas, surrounded by her loving family.
Born December 4, 1934, in Colotlán, Jalisco, Mexico, Ernestina lived her life with deep faith, devotion, and love for her family. A devout Catholic, she shared her unwavering belief with her husband, Winfried, and together they built a home centered on faith, family, and service to others. Her trust in God guided her through every season of life.
Ernestina’s greatest love and joy were her husband and family. She was a loving wife and devoted mother, and raised her children with an abundance of love, faith, and laughter. She adored her grandchildren, helping to raise three of them, cherishing every moment with them, and creating long-lasting memories that will be treasured.
Ernestina left home as a young woman to work in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. It was there that she met the love of her life, Winfried Stevens. They both came to the United States from different countries (Mexico and Germany) and different cultures. They both overcame poverty and many other challenges to make better lives for themselves and their families. Though they didn’t speak the same language, they shared similar values and beliefs, hopes and dreams, and quickly fell in love and married. They settled in Sunland Park, New Mexico, where they raised their family and were active members of San Martin de Porres Catholic Church and were engaged citizens and supporters of the Sunland Park community.
Ernestina was an avid reader, enjoyed tending to her rose garden, loved music and dancing, and was passionate about natural healing, herbal supplements, and natural medicine. She dedicated herself to learning and sharing the benefits of holistic health. A sales associate with Nature’s Sunshine for many years, she enjoyed helping others live healthier lives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Francisco Avila and Maria Romero, and siblings Arnulfo, Miguel, Pedro, and Rosario. She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Winfried, her four children and their spouses, Richard (Lynda) Stevens, Elizabeth “Elly” (Michael) Fitzhugh, Laura (Freddy) Provencio, and Robert (Lynnann) Stevens. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Marcus Holguin, Ellyse Provencio, Freddy Provencio, Jr., and Neida (Javier) Villagomez, and her remaining siblings Carmen, Esperanza, Elvira, and Maria, and many nieces and nephews.
Ernestina was a warm, caring woman who was loved by her family and friends. Despite her health challenges over the last few years, she remained grateful for her life and for what God had provided, and she remained optimistic and hopeful about her and her family’s future. She will be greatly missed. May her memory be a blessing.
