Fernando Hernandez

September 12, 1941 — December 22, 2025

El Paso, Texas

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Fernando “Fernie” Hernandez as he went to be with the Lord on December 22, 2025

Fernie was born in El Paso, Texas, to Anselmo and Isabel Hernandez. He passed away peacefully after fighting a good fight and is now resting alongside his beloved grandmother, Maria Avila; his parents, Anselmo and Isabel Hernandez; his brother, Gilbert Hernandez; and his cherished granddaughter, Savannah Hernandez.

Fernie was born and raised in El Paso’s Segundo Barrio, where he often reminisced about the beautiful memories of his youth, the 4F’s, and countless days spent gathering with friends and family. He grew up in a family of eleven as the third of eight children. He attended Roosevelt Elementary School and Bowie High School. Fernie proudly served his country in the United States Army with the 9th Infantry.

Following his military service, Fernie dedicated over 35 years of hard work to ASARCO. He loved his job and cherished the friendships he made there, the laughter shared, and the drawings—his famous cartoons—he created of his coworkers. His strong work ethic, loyalty, and commitment were evident to all who knew him.

Known for his laughter and sense of humor, Fernie was always ready to share a joke and bring a smile to others. Above all, he was devoted to his family and worked tirelessly to provide for them. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was especially proud to be the grandfather of ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. As a great-grandfather, he was gentle, loving, and kind, leaving behind countless memories filled with warmth, laughter, and unconditional love.

Fernie is survived by his loving wife, Berta; his sons, Gilbert and Xavier (wife Jennifer); his stepson, Fernie (wife Norma); his grandchildren, Amber, Nando, Ashley, Jeremy, Gilbert, Cristian, Serena, Sierrah, and Andrea; his great-grandchildren, Jocelyn, Avery, Hazel, Mykahl, Gilbert, Ariah, and Gabriel; and his siblings, Hector, Miguel (Yolie), Rosie (Alonso), Isabel, Danny (Tammy), and David (Rosa).
