Fernando Mendez, a longtime El Paso resident, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2025, at the age of 92. He died of natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of service, hard work, and dedication to his family. Born on December 3, 1933, Mendez spent more than five decades as a skilled refrigeration mechanic, establishing a reputation as a reliable and trusted professional and teaching the next generation of mechanics. He was also a proud veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S.

Army before reenlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. Mendez was an active member of the Holy God Society during his family's time in Dallas, embodying his strong faith and commitment to service. Throughout his life, he was a steadfast volunteer, offering his time and support to various school events while his sons attended Our Lady of the Assumption and Cathedral High School. Fernando Mendez is survived by his two sons, Louis Arthur (Doug) of New York City and George Mendez of El Paso, as well as his grandson, Briar Anthony Mendez of Sacramento, CA. He is also survived by his sisters, Lucy Villa of El Paso, Marta Sanchez of Covina, CA, and Leonora Bradley of Vancouver, Canada, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Theresa, his parents, Reyes and Luz Mendez, his brother, Ulysses Mendez, and his sisters, Carmen Padilla de Mendez, Maria Antoninetta Esquivel, and Dolores Ortega. A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast, with a rosary service at 6:00 p.m.

Reflections will take place at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, January 16, 2026, also at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast. A graveside service with military honors will follow at 11:00 a.m. at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. The Mendez family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Avir at Patriot and Sierra Providence Hospital for their compassionate care, as well as our aunts Lucy Villa and Carmen Haney, for their unconditional love and unwavering support.
