Flora Jean Smith

August 9, 1933 — October 10, 2025

El Paso

Jean Smith, 92, of El Paso, Texas, passed away peacefully at her home in White Acres on October 10, 2025.

Born Flora Jean Provins on August 8, 1933, in Martinsburg, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Curtis and Cornelia Provins. In high school, Jean was active in a wide range of musical, scholastic, and sporting activities.

Jean married her high school sweetheart, Dale Leroy Smith, on September 6, 1952. They remained a devoted couple until his passing in 2020. As East Coast transplants, Dale and Jean created a loving home in El Paso, where they lived for over forty years. Jean was passionate about the Southwest and took every opportunity to travel, day hike and bird-watch throughout the region.

Her professional life spanned a variety of office management positions, including time in the physics laboratory of Professor Erwin Mueller at Pennsylvania State University and a long career with Muzak Systems of El Paso, from which she retired in 2005.

Beyond her love for nature, Jean was an avid card player, particularly of bridge, engaging in both social and competitive games throughout much of her life. Up until her passing, she continued to play weekly games of Hearts with her close friends. Jean was a member of Western Hills Methodist Church where, after her retirement, she participated in delivering Meals on Wheels to other seniors.

Jean is survived by her loving children: Linda Doyle of Alexandria, Virginia; Lisa Smith and her husband Bob Nagy of Chicago, Illinois; and Brian Smith and his wife Fiona of Wellington, New Zealand. She also leaves behind her cherished grandson, Toby Smith, also of Wellington, New Zealand. Her younger sister, Gloria Dick, resides in Holidaysburg, Pennsylvania, not far from the family farm where Jean grew up.

Jean’s passing was preceded by her two brothers, Lyle (75) and Herbert Provins (83) and her sisters Miriam Wilson (69) and Lorella Greaser (94).

In addition to her human family, she leaves behind by a pack of much loved fur babies, Addie, Cooper, Digby, and Murphy, who visited with her on line and in the fur as often as possible.

A private interment will be held at Fort Bliss National Cemetery where Jean will be reunited with Dale, her partner in life and their eternal ever after. A public memorial for loved ones, friends and neighbors will be held at a future date at White Acres.

Our family would like to pay special tribute to the team of dedicated caregivers who showered our mom with love and attention on a daily basis for over five years. Suki, Suzanna, Isela and Marta, we cherish the time that we have spent with you and welcome you to our family for now and for always.

Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Homes-West, 480 N. Resler.
