Frances Lura Cherry, age 87, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, in El Paso, Texas. She was born in Lockney, Texas to Edwin Stinebaugh and Billie Stewart. After losing her parents at a young age, Frances went to live and receive her early education at the Masonic Home and School of Texas.
In 1957, Frances married Aubrey Cherry in the Texas panhandle and together they built a life filled with family, friends, education and service. While raising 5 children, she attended and graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso and became a dedicated teacher for the El Paso Independent School District. She taught at El Paso High School, the EPISD School Age Parents Center, the EPISD Technical School and, for 3 years, served as President of the El Paso Teachers’ Association. Upon retiring from teaching, Frances became a full-time volunteer. She served the El Paso Retired Teachers Association, the Texas Retired Teachers Association and with great passion, Lions Club International at the local and state level.
Frances is survived by her husband, Aubrey Cherry; her children, Clay Cherry (Diane); Melanie Jones (David); Maryetta Cherry (Joann); and her daughter-in-law, Shelly Cherry; fourteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, and numerous great-great-grandchildren. She also treasured her many nieces, nephews and friends who will cherish and honor her memory. Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin Stinebaugh and Billie Stewart; her sons, Richard Lee Cherry and Michael Craig Cherry; her daughter-in-law, AJ Cherry; and her brother, Edwin Stinebaugh.
A Visitation will be held from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at Western Hills United Methodist Church, followed by a Celebration of Life to commence 12:00 pm. A Graveside Service will follow at 1:45 pm at Memory Gardens of the Valley. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Texas Lions Camp. www.lionscamp.com/donations.html#Honorariums
