George Dater O’Brien, age 93, passed away after a brief illness on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. George was born on August 27, 1931, to James and Georgia O’Brien in Benton Harbor, MI. George attended Culver Military Academy and graduated in 1949. He attended Northwestern, followed by enlistment and service in the US Air Force until 1955.
During military service George was stationed in Narsarsuac, Greenland and at Perrin AFB in Denison, TX where he met Patricia Theisen and married in 1954. In 1964 the family moved to El Paso, TX where George began work at Reynolds Electric.
George was a CPA and career accountant, working for a number of El Paso firms before finishing his career at El Paso Solid Waste Services and retiring at 70.
In his personal life he was a WWII and Old West history buff, serving El Paso Historical Society for several years as a volunteer accountant after retired. George loved a good steak, a cold beer, and a pristine yard. He also loved travel, with numerous ghost town trips around the southwest, visits to Mexico, and cruises over the years.
George is preceded in death by his sister, Virginia ‘Ginge’ O’Brien, and daughter, Anne O’Brien. He is survived by his son, George D. O’Brien Jr. of Fairview, TX; and daughters Mary Ellen O’Brien and Carolyn O’Brien of Tempe, AZ., grandchildren; James O’Brien, Preston O’Brien, Amber Huerta, and Samantha Huerta, and great granddaughters; Annie Williams and Freya O’Brien.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 30, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Sunset Funeral Home-West, 480 N. Resler Dr. Services entrusted to Sunset Funeral Home-West.
