Gyula Szigeti

August 12, 1929 — January 25, 2021

SGM Gyula Szigeti, “Szigi” as he is known by his friends, United States Army Retired, went with the Lord at age 91 on January 25, 2021. He was born in Hungary on Aug 12, 1929. He was orphaned by the age of 9 and then attended parochial school and achieved his Abitur. After WWII he was imprisoned for 7 and a half months in a communist re-education camp as he was deemed “Politically Unreliable”. He eventually escaped communism rule to Austria through minefields and barbed wire with only his Abitur diploma and clothes on his possession. While in Austria he was employed by the French Army. He immigrated to the United States of America in 1955 and enlisted in the United States Army under the “Lodge-Philbin Act of 1950 and retired a 1984 as Sergeant Major, spending the last four years of his career stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. During his tenure with the United States Army his assignments included Recon Pits in Inj. BNS, S-2, and G-2 Sections, along with various Intelligence and Security sections. He was also the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the New York Army National Guard for 5 years. He completed the 7th Army NCO Academy, Field Intelligence Specialist Course and the Army pre-commission extension course. He passed the US Army language qualification course in Hungarian, German, and French. Military Awards include: Legion of Merit, Bronze Star w/OLC, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal w/4OLC. He served in Germany, Vietnam, and Korea. He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree with highest honors from the University of Texas at El Paso. He is preceded in death by his wife Brigitta J. Szigeti. He is survived by Dr. Albert Szabo, his partner Melitta Pisarcik, Robert D. Pisarcik (Elvia), Robert L. Pisarcik (Anne), Dr. Celeste Pisarcik-Ornelas (Daniel), Amanda R. Pisarcik, and all the beautiful children Viviane, Emma, Ember, Charlotte, and Madelynn, which he loved very much. He was also involved in various civic organization including The American Legion, AUSA, Discover El Paso Assn., Germania Club and French Club. Private Committal Service for Immediate Family only will take place with Full Military Honors on Monday, February 8, 2021 at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
