Helen Thomson Vasquez

August 22, 1940 – October 6, 2024

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Helen Thomson Vasquez, who left us peacefully on October 6, 2024. Born on August 22, 1940, in Renfrew, Scotland, Helen lived a life marked by love, service, and deep devotion both to her family and the community around her.

Helen graduated from the Law General Hospital School of Nursing on May 15, 1961. Soon after, she set off on a journey to the United States in 1964, accepting a nursing contract that was meant to last only a year. She chose Texas as her destination because of her curiosity to see Mexico. However, fate had other plans. While working at Providence Memorial Hospital, she met Angel Vasquez. They married on January 2, 1966, and were blessed with 58 wonderful years together. Helen became a proud U.S. citizen in 1984, but she never lost her love for her Scottish roots.

A dedicated and compassionate nurse, Helen spent her career serving others at Providence Memorial Hospital, where she worked until her retirement in 2002. Her caring spirit and sense of humor touched the lives of countless patients and colleagues over the years.

Helen is survived by her beloved husband, Angel Vasquez, and their children: Andrew Vasquez, Sharon Lozano (Joseph), Colin Vasquez, and Ishbel Vasquez (Richard Chavez). Her legacy lives on in her grandchildren: Heather Vasquez, Annalise Lozano, Colin Vasquez Jr., Ian Vasquez, and Riley Vasquez. She is also survived by her brother Clifford Thomson, and cousins Bert Thomson and John McCluskey (Amelia).

She was preceded in death by her mother Isabella, her brothers Alex and Peter Wood, and her dear friend Cathie Fairley, all of whom she held close in her heart.

Helen’s family would like to express their deepest gratitude to her doctors—Dr. Haroutioun Shahinian, Dr. Jeffrey Taber, Dr. Luis Guerra—and to Hospice of El Paso for their compassionate care during her final days. Special thanks also go to her devoted caregivers Yadira, Martha, Amalia, and Josefina, whose kindness and support brought great comfort.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, and her memory will forever be cherished by those who loved her.

Rest in peace, dear Helen. You are deeply missed and forever loved.

A private family service will be held to honor her life.
