Hope Johnetta Lewis Smith was born to the late James Monroe Lewis Sr. and Annie Estelle Booker in Homer, Louisiana on June 6, 1920.
She accepted Christ at an early age and was reared in Ebeneezer Baptist Church. Hope was graduated from Grambling College in Grambling, Louisiana, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She taught school at Richard Parrish Training School in Delhi, Louisiana and other schools in the area for more than 35 years. She received her Master’s Degree from Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas while continuing her career in teaching.
Hope was a devoted member of Greater One Christian Fellowship. She loved The Lord, her family and friends. She enjoyed music, travel and politics and was a dedicated member of the Democratic Party. Hope was one of the Black teachers appointed to serve at Delhi Elementary School as a representative of Token Integration 1968-1969. Hope loved people, the act of conversation and had a great sense of humor. She was a member of The Order of Eastern Star.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving niece, Doris J. Brown (Curtis) of El Paso, Texas; nephew Delbert Hill of Los Angeles, California; great nieces, Lisa Ross (John) and Renata Brown of Dallas, Texas; great, great niece Jade Lauren Jacobs of Fairfax, Virginia and great, great nephew Joshua Curtis Jacobs of El Paso, Texas; her college classmate Marie Hill of Rayville, Louisiana; numerous cousins and friends.
Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM with a Funeral Service at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at Sunset Funeral Home Northeast,. Interment will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 5, 2015 at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
