James Guthrie Sherwood

James Guthrie Sherwood, 78, passed away on Monday, April 6, 2026.

Born in Chelsea, Maine, James proudly served in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division as a Forward Observer and Radio Telephone Operator during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1969. In recognition of his service, he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Parachute Badge.

James married the love of his life, Debbie, and together they built a life centered on God, family, and adventure. They had two sons, Cassidy and Matthew. Cassidy and his wife, Dora, have three children: Camden, Audrey, and Lauren. Matthew is married to Amy, and they have two cats.

Known to many as Jim, he loved motorcycles and rode throughout his adult life. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hiking and camping, but his greatest passion was sailing. Jim and his wife built a 36-foot Bruce Roberts sailboat in their backyard and spent seven years sailing the high seas together.

A Memorial Service will be held following cremation. Details will be shared once arrangements have been finalized.
