Janet Omundson

December 14, 1945 — October 31, 2006

Janet departed in serenity on October 31, 2006 surrounded by loved ones and with her husband holding her hand. We are happy for her that she will always feel good now, and we will always remember her as the wonderful, wonderful gift that she was to us all. She is survived by her husband, Glenn and her son Doug and his wife Katie of Cleveland, Ohio. She also leaves her mother, Mary Heister, two brothers, and a sister. Born December 14, 1945 in Ashland, Ohio. Much of her childhood was spent in that state, though she moved with her family to Kwajalein, Marshall Islands where she graduated from high school. While studying at UTEP she met Glenn Omundson, whom in 1965 she married for life. Together they moved to Austin, then to Oxford, Mississippi where she completed her bachelor's and earned a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Mississippi. They returned to El Paso 1973 and have lived here ever since. Her son, Doug, was born in 1976. She completed the requirements for the CPA certificate and began working as an accountant for El Paso Natural Gas in 1975. In 1978 she accepted a position as an accounting professor at UTEP. She taught at UTEP until she retired in 2000, along the way holding various positions including Associate Dean of the College of Business, Director of the Advising Center, and finally Assistant Vice President – Academic Affairs. She received numerous awards for her excellence in teaching. Besides her achievements in the academic world, Janet was active in the El Paso Chapter of CPAs and the American Society of Women Accountants serving as President. She was the first UTEP accounting professor to be awarded the Outstanding Educator by the Texas Society of CPAs. In everything she did, both personally and professionally, she was extraordinary and selfless. She was a devoted wife, an amazing mother, a great friend, and an outstanding colleague. She was an anchor in the lives of many, many people. Nobody could hope to meet a nicer person. Janet, we all love you. A memorial service will be held for her on Saturday, November 4 at 3:00 PM at University Presbyterian Church, 244 N. Resler. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to the Feingold Association, an organization that for over 30 years has been helping people with ADD, ADHD, asthma, and other problems; for information about donating, visit their website:http://www.feingold.org/.
