J.R. Provencio passed away on April 18th surrounded by family. He was 88 and a lifelong resident of this area. He was a proud Cathedral graduate and belonged to the Alumni Association. He was also a proud UTEP Miner having graduated from Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy now UTEP. He went to graduate school at the University of Denver. He married Velia who after more than 60 years of marriage preceded him in death. He was a Math Professor at UTEP for more than 35 years and was always happy to see his graduates working as Engineers or teachers or in business and he was often sought as a consultant. He was also involved in the community, church, politics and was recently inducted into the Republican Hall of Fame. Daughter Laura Pinard preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister Beatriz, Cooper, children Velia Gurrola, Sylvia Provencio, Marta Zarella, Robert Provencio and Victoria Lugo, daughter and sons-in-law, 14 grandchildren, brother and sister-in-law, Eduardo and Amelia Rivero, nephews and nieces.Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 pm, Friday, April 26, 2013 at Sunset Funeral Home-West with a Vigil at 6:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, April 27, 2013 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Interment to follow at Memory Gardens of the Valley Cemetery.
