John Keith Rumbaugh

John Keith Rumbaugh, 66, passed away on July 28, 2026. While his passing came far too soon, those who knew and loved him will remember a man whose greatest joy was his family and whose life was marked by service, loyalty, and a love of the outdoors.

John was born on March 29, 1960, in Levelland, Texas, to Kenneth Wayne Rumbaugh and Clara LaVerne Shedd. He graduated from Levelland High School in 1978 before proudly serving his country in the United States Army. Following his military service, he returned home and dedicated much of his career to serving the community of Levelland.

He began his career with the City of Levelland in the Water Department before fulfilling his dream of becoming a police officer. John retired from the City of Levelland in 1997 after years of public service.

John later made Alaska his home for sixteen years, where he discovered a deep love of fishing and embraced the beauty of the outdoors. Whether casting a line into the water or spending time with family, those years created many cherished memories.

Outside of work, one of John's greatest passions was horses. He was an active member of the Hockley County Sheriff's Posse, where he enjoyed riding, volunteering, and sharing his love of horses with others. He was also a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan who faithfully cheered on his team every season, no matter the outcome.

In June 1990, John married Geneva Garcia, and together they welcomed three children: Amanda Morgan (Viktor Morgan), Samantha Rumbaugh, and Michael Rumbaugh. Although John and Geneva later went their separate ways after twenty years of marriage, they remained united in their love and devotion to the family they created together. John never stopped being a proud and dedicated father.

In 2011, John embraced what would become one of the greatest joys of his life—the role of "Papa" to his beloved granddaughter, Kaylin Butler. She held a special place in his heart, and the bond they shared brought him immeasurable happiness.

In March 2020, when Amanda married Viktor Morgan, John proudly welcomed three bonus grandchildren into his heart: Bianca, Dominic, and Alexander Morgan. He loved them as his own from the very beginning and treasured watching them grow.

John will be remembered for his quiet strength, his commitment to serving others, his unwavering love for his family, and his generous heart. Whether serving his country, protecting his community as a police officer, spending a peaceful day fishing, cheering on the Cowboys, or simply being "Dad" and "Papa," John lived a life centered on caring for the people he loved.

John was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Wayne Rumbaugh.

He is survived by his mother, Clara LaVerne Shedd; his brother, Tommy Rumbaugh; his sister, Shantel Lorenz; his children, Amanda Morgan (Viktor Morgan), Samantha Rumbaugh, and Michael Rumbaugh; his cherished grandchildren, Kaylin Butler, Bianca Morgan, Dominic Morgan, and Alexander Morgan; five nephews and one niece; as well as extended family, dear friends, and all whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

Though our hearts are broken by his loss, we take comfort in the memories he gave us, the lessons he taught us, and the love he leaves behind. His legacy lives on through those who knew him, loved him, and will carry his memory forward every day.
