Jose Maria Gomez

José Maria Gómez, died November 19, 2006 peacefully in his sleep. Born September 8, 1936 in El Paso, TX he attended Cathedral High School and graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in architecture. He served 2 ½ years in the US Army before beginning his career as an architect in El Paso. His legacy includes countless significant structures in the El Paso area. The UTEP campus features many of his designs and renovations, among them the Library and College of Business, and the renovation of Old Main and the Centennial Museum. He designed numerous educational facilities for EPCC and local school districts. At the time of his death, he was completing his work on the El Paso Museum of History at Cleveland Square. Surviving are his daughter, Lorena Raechel Gómez, and his son, José Eduardo Gómez, and their mother, Mónica E. Gómez; his mother, Maria Prats de Gómez; his sisters, Isabel G. Fushille (husband, Dr. Michael Fushille), and Felisa G. Cotera (husband, Arq. Vicente Cotera); many family and countless friends. Visitation will be held from 5 pm to 9 pm, Tuesday, November 21, 2006 at Sunset Funeral Home-West, with a vigil at 7 pm, 480 N. Resler at Orizaba. A funeral mass will be held at 10 am, Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, 930 E. Redd Rd at Resler. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens of the Valley, 4900 McNutt Rd.
