Julie R. Gallegos lived a life defined by service, compassion, and dedication to her community, family, and friends.
For an extraordinary 58 years, she served the community through Houchen Community Center. Julie worked as a nurse midwife from 1957 until the Maternity Care Hospital closed in 1986, devoting her career to caring for mothers and welcoming new life into the world. After the hospital closed, she remained at Houchen Community Center, continuing her lifelong commitment to service in a variety of roles. Throughout the years, she created and led numerous programs that enriched the lives of countless community members and eventually retired as Senior Citizen Director.
Julie also shared her love of creativity by teaching ceramics. She taught classes not only at Houchen Community Center but throughout the community, including at Carolina Community Center, bringing people together through art and learning.
In recognition of her decades of service and commitment to others, in 2013 she was honored with a United States flag flown over the U.S. Capitol at the request of Congressman Beto O’Rourke, acknowledging her remarkable contributions as Senior Citizen Director and community leader.
Above all, Grandma Julie cherished her family. She was a devoted mother and a proud grandmother and great-grandmother to many. Her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering support will live on through the generations she helped raise and the countless lives she touched.
She will be laid to rest at Fort Bliss National Cemetery alongside her beloved husband, Salvador Gallegos Sr., who passed away in 2007, reunited at last to spend eternity dancing together.
Julie R. Gallegos will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and the many friends and community members whose lives she enriched throughout her long and meaningful life. Her legacy of service and dedication to community will never be forgotten
