Leopoldo Hernandez Jr.

Leopoldo Hernandez Jr., age 81, entered into the hands of our Lord and Savior on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather who will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Leopoldo was a Bowie High School graduate of 1964 and a UTEP alumni of 1971.

Leopoldo proudly served his country as a Vietnam Veteran in the U.S. Navy, attaining the rank of Aviation Storekeeper, Petty Officer Second Class. Following his military service, he built a career as an accountant and later found great joy in teaching and coaching, dedicating many years of service to EPISD until his retirement.

A man of strong faith and community, Leopoldo was a longtime member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council 14413. He also taught R.C.I.A. for many years.

He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Denise Hernandez, and his siblings, Luis Hernandez and Jaime Hernandez.

Leopoldo is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Ofelia Hernandez; his cherished daughters, Karen Hernandez and Elizabeth Terrazas (Ignacio); his sisters, Margarita Gorissen and Rebecca Purcell; and his adored grandchildren, Michael C. Flores, Alexis S. Gardea, Lucas I. Terrazas, and Aaron I. Terrazas, along with numerous extended family members who will continue to cherish his memory.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the Holy Rosary recited at 6:00 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home–West.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, located at 1551 Belvidere Street.

Pallbearers will be Michael C. Flores, Ignacio Terrazas, Lucas I. Terrazas, Aaron I. Terrazas, David Holguin, Daniel Cuevas, Alfonso Hernandez, and Daniel Hernandez.

Interment will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m., with Navy Honors.
