Luis Velasco, Jr., passed away on Monday, June 8, 2026. Luis was born on October 7, 1945. He was a 1965 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School. Luis proudly served his country in the U.S Navy, completed two Vietnam War tours; earning the Purple Heart Medal, the Combat for Valor medal, Vietnam Service medal, Texas Veteran medal, and National Defense medal.
He married the love of his life, Paula Moreno, on December 23, 1967. He retired after 30 years of service from the UTEP Bookstore in 2002, and was a member of the VFW. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved long walks and getting to know people, and always enjoyed helping others.
Luis is preceded in death by his parents, Luis and Estela Velasco. He leaves behind his loving wife of 59 years Paula Velasco and his children, Patricia Velasco, Arlene Velasco, and Luis Velasco, III., 16 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 from 4:00-8:00pm with a rosary at 6:00pm at Sunset Funeral Homes-East, 750 N. Carolina. Funeral mass will be on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 12:00pm at Our Lady of the Light Church, 4700 Delta. Interment will follow at 1:30pm at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Military Honors.
