Marjorie Johnson Rawlings

1944-2025

Marjorie Johnson Rawlings passed away unexpectedly on the morning of July 6th, 2025, after a fall and brief stay in rehabilitation. She leaves behind a legacy of mentoring, leadership in service, and loving motherhood.

Margie was born in October of 1944 in Fort Stockton, Texas - the only child of Dwight and Winnie Mae Johnson, who instilled in her a love of reading, card playing, and all manner of creative pursuits. She graduated from Fort Stockton High School with honors at the top of her class.

She first attended Rice University, finishing her degree in Education at the University of Houston. Margie met and married John Rawlings from Pasadena, Texas, and had a son, David. She divorced and never remarried. She completed student teaching in Houston, Texas, before moving to El Paso to join her parents, where she taught Mathematics at Henderson Jr. High. After obtaining her secondary certificate, she finished her twenty-seven-year career at Jefferson High School.

Margie retired at the ripe old age of fifty-three and never regretted the decision. This allowed her to take care of her father and engage full time in creative pursuits, including sewing, quilting, card making, and playing duplicate bridge. She travelled the country attending events with her dear friends, achieving the ACBL rank of Diamond Life Master.

A member of University Presbyterian Church since the early 1970s, she served one term as an Elder and for nearly two decades on the Fellowship Committee, helping run the kitchen and organize special events. She was a founding and active member of the Game Group for many years. We will remember her legacy and contributions to this church every time we see the numerous banners and matching pulpit cloths she designed and handcrafted.

Margie is preceded in death by her parents, Dwight Charles Johnson and Winnie Mae Johnson, and is survived by her son, David, who will always remember that she put him first before anything else. God bless her friends, co-workers, and students who have come to share memories or just to say hello – to know that she touched your life in some way would mean so much to her.
